History of Grimsby Spiritualist Church
The Deputy Mayor of Grimsby, Alderman William J. Molson, on Saturday 23rd December 1967, conducted Duncombe Street Spiritualist Church opening ceremony. Isobel M. Johnson was the President at that time.
Due to lack of support, and the failing health of Isobel, the Church closed its doors and was used as a storeroom for an electrical retailer.
A major redevelopment project was under way with Hamilton Street, Kent Street and many others being pulled down to make way for the 16 story flats.
At the rear of Hamilton Street, a small hut was used as a Spiritualist Church know as New Clee Church, which was affiliated to the Spiritualist National Union (SNU). A stalwart of that Church, Mrs. Marshall, searched high and low for another property, as the one that they were moved to because of the redevelopment was not satisfactory for the purpose of religious worship.
Eventually, under the Presidency of Sally Francis, Duncombe Street Spiritualist Church opened its doors as a Church again and has remained open to this day, thanks to all its supporters.
